business focus: the falcondale at 15
The Falcondale has stood for over 150 years, with Chris, Lisa and Derek as the latest custodians having been the proprietors for the last 15 years. To mark this important anniversary, we thought we’d speak to them about the history of the hotel, as well as some exclusive offers for the weeks ahead…
Congratulations, we hear you’re celebrating a pretty special birthday, is that right?
We cannot quite believe it ourselves, but it has now been 15 fabulous years since we first opened the doors at The Falcondale.
How did your family come to become proprietors of the hotel?
We were living and working in Mexico when the opportunity arose for us to return home to Britain. We decided as a family that we would purchase a business in which we could all participate within. We first saw the Falcondale for sale on the Internet, and as we came around the bend on the drive we absolutely fell in love with the building.
Give us a bit of background to the history of the Falcondale Hotel?
The Harford family, who resided in Blaise Bristol, commissioned the building that you see today which would be their summer home. It is an Italianate styled Victorian building with all the modern mod cons the age.
The Harford family enjoyed the Falcondale estate for just under a century, before being largely sold to tenants. The mansion itself became an old people’s home for 20 years under the ownership of the county council, before being turned into a hotel by the Smith family. It was then in 2000 that we bought the business from the Smith family and carried out the renovations, refurbishments and improvements that it desperately needed.
What makes the Falcondale stand out as an accommodation in the Cambrian Mountains?
The character of the mansion is the complete antithesis of the gloomy dimly lit buildings that you so often get. Light floods down the stairwell skylights and through the full-length windows in the lounges and restaurants. Victorian features are evident throughout, which gives a warm comfortable atmosphere.
We have worked hard to gain (and retain) a 4-star country house setting, and the kitchen brigade has held 2AA rosettes for 8 consecutive years.
Have you got any new/unique packages to tell people about?
