A spotlight on… Cambrian Safaris
Cambrian Safaris is a new business whose aim is to bring about a re-discovery of the wonderful scenery, landscapes and heritage of mid-Wales.
They’ll take you on an exciting tour of backroads and forgotten routes through the diverse and rugged countryside, where you can get a real experience of the ‘Wild Tranquility’ and diverse nature of this forgotten region – all from the comfort of their Land Rover Discovery.
Richard and Hester Smith have lived in the area for over 18 years and have always delighted in giving friends and family a glimpse of what the area has to offer. Seven years of ownership of an old military ‘Lightweight’ Land Rover means that they have a real in-depth knowledge of the landscape and have sought out some of the best hidden gems that the Cambrian Mountains has to offer, and their extensive exploration and knowledge of the region makes them perfect guides to introduce to to this wonderful and forgotten area of Wales.
The Cambrian Mountains has a wonderfully diverse range of wildlife, natural and man-made landscapes – pass through forest or open moorland, plunge into valleys and crevices and climb upland routes past reservoirs and dams as well as taking a look at the old mines and mining villages where people tried (and still do) to eek out an existence in the hills.
Follow in the footsteps of artists, poets, writers and the aristocracy who came to marvel at the rugged landscapes and hunt out the best spots. At a time when it was fashionable to take a tour of Europe, Aberystwyth became one of the most popular genteel seaside resorts and mid-Wales was at the heart of the ‘picturesque movement’. You will experience the stark contrast between the gentrified estates and scattered upland smallholdings and farmsteads, passing through the old Cardiganshire Silver Lead mining remains and The Elan Valley, known as the ‘Welsh Lake District’.
Cambrian Safaris is taking a pioneering role in showing off and flagging up the best of what Mid-Wales has to offer and invites everyone to come and “Discover the Wild Tranquility”. They offer a range of different tours and welcome everyone to begin a re-discovery of the hidden treasures of the Cambrian Mountains.
